<description>Epidemiological and clinical profile of congenital malformations in Benghazi Pediatric Hospital
Alkarshouf, Yasmeenah S. H; Greiw, Azza E. H; El Misallati, Abd Alsalam
Objectives: The objectives were to assess the nature and the frequency of congenital malformations among infants and children who were admitted to Benghazi pediatric hospital and to&#13;
study the associated maternal and neonatal risk factors.&#13;
Patients and methods: A cross-sectional study design was used for this study. It included infants and children aged (0-16 yrs.) who were admitted to Benghazi Children Hospital and who&#13;
were following the genetic clinic, during the period of March 2016 to March 2017. These cases&#13;
had dysmorphic features and multiple congenital malformations. A record sheet was used to&#13;
collect the required data from cases.&#13;
Results: The total number of patients was 81 children, 51.85% were females, 48.15% were&#13;
males and infants represented 62%. Cases with a history of consanguineous marriage represented 28.40%. Equal proportions of mothers (1.23%) had a history of diabetes, epilepsy and&#13;
cardiomyopathy. Nearly a quarter of cases, (24.69%) were low birth weight. Prevalence of&#13;
congenital malformations (CMs) according to organs were; CVS (50.62%), musculoskeletal&#13;
(44.44%), eye (24.7%), limb defect (17.3%), GIT (14.8%), ear (14.8%), CNS (11.11%), urogenital (external &amp; internal)(11%), cleft lip &amp; palate (9.9%) and Trisomy 21 syndrome (48.1%).&#13;
Trisomy 21 syndrome have a high frequency of CHD compared to other syndromes; 67.9% had&#13;
CHD, P=.01. Most cases (90%) died within the first year of life, p=.002. Twenty-six percent of&#13;
the studied population died during the study period.&#13;
Conclusion: Most children with CMs and chromosomal abnormalities died within the first&#13;
year of life. There is a limitation of screening tools, which could lead to imprecise genetic counseling. CM is a significant cause of morbidity and admission. The highest prevalence of CMs&#13;
was CVS. Trisomy 21 syndrome was the most prevalent chromosomal abnormalities; these&#13;
cases were at more risk to have CHD compared to other syndromes. There is a shortage of&#13;
medical services, which applied as segmental services.

<title>Quaternary Beach Dunes in Daryanah Area NW of Al Jabal al Akhdar, NE Libya</title>
<link>https://repository.uob.edu.ly/handle/123456789/1304</link>
<description>Quaternary Beach Dunes in Daryanah Area NW of Al Jabal al Akhdar, NE Libya
Albosayfee, Asseil M; Ashahomi, Khalifa A
The present study has shown that the Quaternary beach dunes of Daryanah area are composed&#13;
of four distinctive lithological facies, these are the planer cross bed calcarenite facies, lenticular&#13;
calcarenite facies, massive calcarenite, and alluvial deposits facies. The planer cross-bedding&#13;
and the lenticular bedding are interpreted to reflect aeolian deposits. The massive calcarenite&#13;
is thought to have been accumulated in shallow marine. The interbedded calcarenites and alluvial deposits interpreted to represent cycles of prograding alluvial system associated with&#13;
Eustatic sea-level changes.&#13;
The paleo-winds in the area were mostly unimodal blowing between 290and 330,&#13;
which were influenced by the escarpment position and orientation. The age of these&#13;
deposits has been attributed to Early Pleistocene (Calabrian) based on its occurrence above the sea level and correlation with previous studies.

<title>Assessment of brine disposal from Zliten desalination plant in marine environment</title>

<description>Assessment of brine disposal from Zliten desalination plant in marine environment
Algoul, Salah M; Algish, Abdalbaset M; Musbah, Abdalhamed A
Desalination plants cause environmental pollution of local effects. Disposal of desalination effluents is considered as a serious environmental dilemma. The concentration of brine varies&#13;
from 50 to 75 g/L and has a much higher density than seawater and consequently tends to fall&#13;
on the seafloor near the brine outfall outlet (plume effect), therefore, creating a very salty layer&#13;
that can have a negative impacts on the flora and the marine life and any related human activities. In this work, we present a case study on the environmental impacts of the effluents from&#13;
the MSF seawater desalination plant into a coastal and marine ecosystem of Zliten-Libya. Samples were collected from the reject channel and therefore many parameters were measured&#13;
such as PH, Temperature, Salinity, Conductivity and other parameters related to seawater and&#13;
produced water have been investigated too. The results showed that the pH is slightly lower&#13;
than the seawater; the values range from 6.1 to 7.8. The salinity of brine discharge was found&#13;
57113 ppm compared with 35000 ppm for the seawater. The TDS of brine discharge registered&#13;
56700mg/l in comparison with 32000 mg/l for seawater, Reject brines were around 10-14C&#13;
higher than the ambient seawater temperature, which causes a negative impact on marine&#13;
ecosystems

<title>Pregnancy outcomes of placenta Previa at Benghazi-Libya 2012 - 2013</title>
<link>https://repository.uob.edu.ly/handle/123456789/1302</link>
<description>Pregnancy outcomes of placenta Previa at Benghazi-Libya 2012 - 2013
Emjawer, Fawzia Saleh; Barakat Ben Sauod, Ekram A; Eshgaifa, Mohammed Mansour
Introduction: Placenta Previa (PP) is associated with high demands on health care resources&#13;
due to maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Complications include the potential for severe bleeding and preterm birth, as well as the need for cesarean delivery. The objective of&#13;
this study was to determine maternal &amp; fetal complications of placenta previa according to&#13;
placental location. A case–series study was conducted on pregnant women diagnosed as placenta previa by ultrasonography and delivered at Al-Jamhoria Hospital, medical records of&#13;
women were reviewed from medical records retrospectively and placental position as documented in the medical record of the women, placental location.&#13;
Results &amp; conclusion: Most of the cases (60%) aged between 31-40 years. The posterior placenta was constituted to 51.2%, while anterior 48.8%, gravity distribution was nearly the&#13;
same in anterior and posterior. placenta previa was in patients with parity ≥2 in 65 % for both&#13;
anterior and posterior, the difference was not statistically significant. The majority of cases&#13;
with placenta previa had no previous history of abortion, 66.7% of anterior position and 73.2%&#13;
of the posterior position. Placenta accreta and of history abortion were not statistically significant. Hysterectomy is statistical significant p=0.021. One patient died due to pulmonary embolism. Regarding the position of babies, all babies in anterior position were stable but those&#13;
in posterior 2.4% were intra uterine fetal death (IUFD) and 2.4 % were serious. In terms of the&#13;
condition of the babies, 20 % of them were premature. We recommended further large sample&#13;
size studies to verify these findings, and to determine whether pregnancies with the anterior&#13;
or posterior placenta may need more intensive care monitoring for mothers and babies.

<title>Gestational diabetes effect on the histological structure of human Placenta</title>
<link>https://repository.uob.edu.ly/handle/123456789/1301</link>
<description>Gestational diabetes effect on the histological structure of human Placenta
Ali, Halima A; Sati, Ali I; Mansur, Hoda S; Muftah, Saleh S; Amghaiab, Iman E
Many studies have been carried on the placenta of diabetic mothers to determine the changes&#13;
in placenta structure as an adaptation to the diabetic environment. These changes are one of&#13;
the detrimental fetal outcomes regardless of the good care of diabetic women. The aim of this&#13;
study is to recognize the histological changes in the placenta of pregnant women with gestational diabetes and the effect of these changes on fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity.&#13;
The study was done on 30 placentae from diagnosed pregnant women with gestational diabetes treated with insulin. The control group involves 30 placentae obtained from normal&#13;
healthy women. Both groups of placentae were full-term and post caesarean delivery. The biopsies of the placentae were collected from the central and peripheral regions and treated to&#13;
obtain paraffin sections, and then stained with Masson’s Trichrome stain. Under a light microscope, the sections were examined and photographed by using a digital camera. An increase in&#13;
chorionic villi vasculature and a number of young villi were observed in the placentae of diabetic group. These changes could clarify the increase of morbidity and mortality in fetal and&#13;
neonate associated with diabetes. On the other hand, these histological changes could be modifying changes as it has been shown that functions of the placenta were not severely distressed,&#13;
as a result, of diabetes, as there are compensative adjusting responses.

<title>Refined saddlepoint approximations for the normalizing constant of the complex Bingham quartic distribution: A change of variable approach</title>
<link>https://repository.uob.edu.ly/handle/123456789/1300</link>
<description>Refined saddlepoint approximations for the normalizing constant of the complex Bingham quartic distribution: A change of variable approach
Ganeiber, Asaad M
The complex Bingham quartic (CBQ) distribution is defined on the unit complex sphere in ℂ&#13;
&#119896;−1&#13;
and it is relevant for the statistical shape analysis of a &#119896;-point landmark data in 2D. This extended the Fisher distribution on the unit spherical shape space &#119878;&#13;
2&#13;
(1/2). The complex Bingham quartic (CBQ) distribution provides suitable shape parameters to comprise anisotropy.&#13;
Under high concentrations, it looks like a multivariate Gaussian normal distribution but the&#13;
main drawback of this planar shape distribution is that its normalizing constant does not have&#13;
a simple closed explicit form representation. The present paper provides a modified approximation procedure for the indeterminate normalizing constant of the CBQ distribution based&#13;
on saddlepoint approximations with a change of variable scheme. The modified saddlepoint&#13;
approximations under a change of variable seem more precise as compared with the saddlepoint approximations without a change of variable approach

<title>An adjusted scale binomial Beta H-Likelihood estimation method for unbalanced clustered binary response models</title>
<link>https://repository.uob.edu.ly/handle/123456789/1299</link>
<description>An adjusted scale binomial Beta H-Likelihood estimation method for unbalanced clustered binary response models
El-Saeiti, Intesar N
In practice, clustered binary responses are very prevalent, where binary data is naturally&#13;
grouped by sampling techniques. Clusters are often unequal in size in some areas of studies,&#13;
such as medicine, education and others. The most suitable models for binary data clusters of&#13;
unbalanced sizes are the Hierarchical Generalized Linear Model (HGLM), where the random&#13;
term over-dispersion counts; and it is k known as clustered binary data. Current techniques&#13;
for estimating parameters in (HGLM) are many, but these techniques do not allow over dispersion to be distinct from cluster to cluster. Where clustered binary data resulted in over-variation, that reasonable to conclude the unequal size of clustered binary data may have been distinct variations for distinct clusters. By ignoring the chance of shifting over variability between&#13;
clusters, test statistics may be inflated in the Type I error rates. In this paper, the binomial beta&#13;
(BB) (HGLM) method has been altered to account for distinct variations across separate clusters. In order to explore whether the Adjusted Scale Binomial Beta (ASBB) method is more&#13;
suitable than the (BB) technique for dealing with over-dispersion for unequal cluster binary&#13;
data models, the author was used simulation, the adjusted method was compared to the original "existing" technique in terms of, Type I error rate, estimator standard errors and power.&#13;
(ASBB) h-likelihood “adjusted” method was comparable to BB "existing" technique, as it has a&#13;
less standard error and the Type I error was acceptable. Moreover, Type I error inflated in&#13;
“exist method” (BB) h-likelihood.

<description>Optimization of the separation of benzoic acid and sulphanilamide by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE)
Kashbor, Mohamed M
Sulfonamide and Benzoic acid play a significant role regarding the treatment and inhibition of&#13;
bacteria and its side effect on human health. Due to this, different analytical techniques with&#13;
various adjustments to their parameters have been highlighted as an important challenge that&#13;
should be tested in order to achieve the most efficient separation process, and thus to enable&#13;
both qualitative and quantitative measurements of these substances. Therefore, the separation of the above-named compounds had been conducted by capillary zone electrophoresis&#13;
(CZE) technique. Moreover, the comparison between both compounds in terms of organic,&#13;
buffer and voltage at 25kV, 20kV had was achieved. Hence, this work was performed to determine the optimum experimental conditions of capillary voltage, with keeping ionic strength of&#13;
buffer and percentage of organic modifier constant due to experimental time constraints.

An indoor air pollutant is a very real and dangerous thing because is far more than outdoor&#13;
air. A pollutant is any harmful contaminant in the air; therefore, indoor air pollution is when&#13;
pollutant from substance contaminate the air indoors, such as gas, particles, rectifiers, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, spices, perfumes, and fungi that are inside the house. The objective of&#13;
this study is to assess mothers' knowledge about indoor asthma triggers and their impacts on&#13;
children's health. The researcher prepared a questionnaire for mothers and distributed it to&#13;
children in schools for interviews. The study used children and their mothers, asthma triggers&#13;
and mothers' knowledge. The cross-sectional study started in January to June 2017 descriptive&#13;
design was used: population of the study included all students at Othman Ben Afan elementary&#13;
school in Benghazi city. 42% of mothers do not use incense every day. Most of the mothers&#13;
who answered the questionnaire read precautions posted on the label of detergent before using and 25% of mothers whose children with allergic asthma. Most of the mothers use ventilation as a control measure. The results showed a high percentage of mothers have knowledge&#13;
about indoor pollutants. Besides, moderate percentages of mothers have been spraying pesticides indoors.
